The I Structure A Manual for Conscious Choice
Mark Greer · 13 chapters · ~16 min
The I Structure and the Method of Choosing Time, Free Will, Revelation, Experience, and the Lawful Movement of Life There is a question hidden inside the I Structure that determines everything: How do I choose?
That question belongs to Free Will. But Free Will is often misunderstood. People imagine Free Will as unlimited independence, as if the soul stands outside all structure and can simply invent reality from nothing. Others imagine Free Will as an illusion, as if the individual has no true power and is merely dragged along by time, biology, fate, trauma, culture, or circumstance. The I Structure gives a better answer. Free Will is not freedom from structure. Free Will is awakened movement within structure. The human being does not choose from nowhere. The human being chooses inside a field. That field includes body, memory, desire, consequence, environment, relationship, time, death, revelation, experience, and the wider mystery of Life. The question is not whether we are choosing. We are always choosing. The question is whether we are choosing consciously or unconsciously. The method is this: See what’s so.Do what works.Test it through Functionality, Adaptability, and Sustainability.Discern it through Joy, Truth, and Love. Then choose as Cause, not as Effect. This is how the I Structure becomes practical. It is not only a symbol. It is a living method.
I. The I Structure
The I Structure is built from three primary elements.
At the top is Desire.
Desire asks:
What am I becoming?
Desire is the upward pull of possibility. It is longing, orientation, direction, imagination, hunger, vision, and
becoming. Without Desire, there is no movement. Nothing reaches upward. Nothing asks to become more than
it currently is.
At the bottom is Free Will.
Free Will asks:
How do I choose?
Free Will is the power of navigation within Life. It does not create the entire field, but it chooses relation
within the field. It decides posture, movement, response, action, word, and embodiment.
Between Desire and Free Will stands the vertical line: Sophia / F.A.S.
Sophia is Wisdom. In this system, Wisdom is not merely knowing many things. Wisdom is the lawful ordering
of Life so that Desire does not become fantasy and Free Will does not become chaos.
Sophia asks three questions:
Functionality — Does it work?
Adaptability — Can it change without breaking?
Sustainability — Can it continue without collapse?
These three questions form F.A.S.
F.A.S. is the wisdom test.
It determines whether a desire can become real, whether a choice can survive changing conditions, and
whether a pattern can remain alive without consuming itself.
At the center of the I is the Now.
The Now is the local I.
It is the point where awareness, choice, and experience meet.
The Now is where Desire becomes possible, Sophia becomes necessary, and Free Will becomes consequential.
The top asks, “What am I becoming?”
The bottom asks, “How do I choose?”
The vertical asks, “Can this choice function, adapt, and sustain?”
The center asks, “What is actually happening now?”
This is the whole structure.
II. Time Is Not the Law
The ordinary human view is that time is a river.
Past is behind us.
Present is where we are.
Future is ahead of us.
We imagine ourselves being carried by time, pushed by the past and pulled toward the future. In that view, the
individual often feels powerless. Life appears to be something that happens to us. We wait to see what time will
bring.
But a deeper view says something different.
Time may not be a river carrying us. Time may be the way the mind organizes change, memory, motion, and
relation. Clocks measure motion. Calendars measure cycles. Days measure rotation. Years measure orbit. But
none of these prove that time itself is a flowing substance.
The deeper insight is this:
Time is not the law. Relationship is the law.
This is where Julian Barbour becomes useful.
Barbour’s work suggests that what we call time may not be fundamental. Instead, reality may be understood as
configurations, complete arrangements, or “Nows.” A Now is not an empty instant. A Now is a whole
relational state. It contains structure, memory, trace, position, relation, and possibility.
Under this view, the past is not a place behind us. The past is encoded as record.
A scar is a record.
A memory is a record.
A fossil is a record.
A photograph is a record.
A body is a record.
A habit is a record.
A wound is a record.
A skill is a record.
A story is a record.
The past survives in the present as structure.
The future is not yet visible as experience, but it is approached through possibility, relation, and choice.
The present is the lived point of awareness.
So the human being is not merely being carried by time.
The human being is standing inside a Now, reading records, observing contrast, and choosing direction.
That is where Free Will lives.
III. The Field of Nows
The I Structure stands inside the larger field called Dream.
Dream is the field of possibility.
It is the field of Nows.
It is not “dream” as unreality. It is Dream as the pre-formal field from which form arises, changes, and becomes.
Dream contains the possibilities, the contrasts, the records, the images, the memories, and the configurations
through which Life may know itself.
This is where the Conversations with God passage becomes important.
The teaching says that you do not need to create the opposite of what you are in order to experience what you
choose. You do not need to create suffering in your own backyard in order to understand joy. You do not need
to create poverty in your own house in order to understand abundance. You do not need to create violence in
your own body in order to understand peace.
The contrast already exists.
The universe is already a contextual field.
The method is not to recreate the opposite.
The method is to observe that the opposite already exists, remember it, and choose.
This is revolutionary.
The immature soul learns by repeating pain.
The awakened soul learns by observing pain.
The master remembers pain without needing to recreate it.
This is the difference between experience and revelation.
IV. Experience and Revelation
There are two primary ways human beings remember.
The first is Experience.
Experience is memory earned through direct consequence.
Experience is touching the stove and burning your hand. After that, nobody has to convince you that fire
burns. The knowledge is in the body. It is personal, intimate, embodied, and unforgettable.
Experience is powerful.
But experience is expensive.
It costs pain, time, loss, delay, damage, regret, or exhaustion. It is the hard teacher. It is not wrong. Sometimes
it is necessary. But it is often the slower road.
The second way is Revelation.
Revelation is memory awakened before consequence has to repeat.
Revelation may come through God, intuition, scripture, a father, a mentor, a friend, a stranger, a book, another
person’s mistake, a dream, history, nature, observation, or silence.
Revelation is the father saying to the child:
“Bring the idea to me first. I can show you where that road leads.”
The child still has Free Will. The father is not controlling the child. The father is offering a higher road of
remembrance. The child can learn from another’s experience rather than needing to bleed personally for every
truth.
Experience says:
“I know because I suffered it.”
Revelation says:
“I know because I observed, listened, remembered, and chose before suffering had to teach me again.”
This gives us a strong law:
Revelation ignored becomes experience required.
If the soul will not listen, life may teach through consequence.
If the soul listens, life may teach through revelation.
The higher path is not to avoid all experience. Life must still be lived. The body matters. Action matters.
Embodiment matters. But the soul does not need to recreate every possible suffering in order to become wise.
The awakened being learns from the whole field.
V. Looking Up
The phrase “look up” is crucial.
To look up is to stop shrinking reality down to your immediate wound.
If you only look at your own fear, your own room, your own pain, your own body, your own bank account,
your own loneliness, and your own history, you may start to think that your local condition is the whole truth.
But the universe is wider than your local condition.
Looking up means observing the larger field.
When we look into space, we see older light arriving now. The stars are not merely decorations. They are
records. The sky is a library of distance, light, motion, and memory. In the act of looking outward, we are
seeing traces of what has been.
Symbolically, looking up means:
Observe the field.
See the contrast.
Remember that it exists.
Do not recreate it locally unless wisdom truly requires embodiment.
This is the Highly Evolved Being method.
A highly evolved being does not need negativity in its immediate society in order to know positivity. It can
observe contrast elsewhere in the field. It can remember what negativity is without building a civilization
around it.
This is what humanity is being invited to learn.
We do not need hell in the house to know heaven is real.
We do not need fear in the body to know love is real.
We do not need poverty in the present to know provision is real.
We do not need death as terror to know Life is eternal.
We need observation, remembrance, discernment, and conscious choice.
VI. Death as Forgetting and Record
Death also changes under this framework.
Death is not annihilation.
Death is not the destruction of Life.
Death is forgetting, transition, change of form, and relocation of presence into record.
When a person dies, the body changes form. The relationship changes access. The local presence is no longer
available in the same way. But what was real is not lost.
Presence becomes memory.
Memory becomes record.
Record becomes wisdom.
Wisdom becomes further becoming.
This does not mean grief is fake. Grief is real at the level of relationship. The local I suffers the loss of local
access. The body misses the body. The voice misses the voice. The hand misses the hand.
But death is not the final truth of Life.
Death is Life changing its mode of appearance.
In the I Structure, death belongs to the field of transition. It reveals that form is not ultimate, but form is still
sacred. The body is not garbage. The body is the place where choice becomes real. The body is the local temple
of the Now.
So death should not create contempt for the body.
It should create reverence for the temporary.
The flower falls so the tree may fruit.
Presence becomes record so Life may continue as wisdom.
VII. Many I’s, One I
This raises the deeper question:
Is there more than one me?
The answer depends on the level.
At the body level, there is one local I.
You are you.
Your body matters. Your choices matter. Your work, food, sleep, home, debt, relationships, grief, habits, and
environment matter. You cannot dismiss the local self by saying, “It is all one.” That would be spiritual
bypassing.
At the soul level, there may be many expressions of you.
Many lives. Many forms. Many Nows. Many perspectives. Many ways the soul explores, remembers, suffers,
chooses, and becomes.
At the Life level, there is one Great I.
One Self in essence.
Many I’s in expression.
This does not destroy individuality. It explains individuality.
A wave is not fake because the ocean is real.
A candle is not fake because the sun is greater.
A local I is not fake because the Great I contains it.
The local I is the place where the Great I becomes personal.
The local I is where Free Will is tested.
The local I is where Love becomes action.
The local I is where Life experiences itself from a particular angle.
So the mature conclusion is not:
“Everyone is me, so nothing matters.”
The mature conclusion is:
Everyone is me, so everything matters more.
Cruelty becomes self-injury.
Love becomes self-recognition.
Forgiveness becomes reintegration.
Revelation becomes learning through another part of the Self before your own local body must suffer the same
consequence.
This is how the many and the One fit together.
Many I’s in expression.
One I in essence.
VIII. Cause and Effect, Not Passive Waiting
Another correction is necessary.
The law is Cause and Effect.
Not passive waiting.
The phrase “we’ll see” can be wise, but it is not the law. “We’ll see” is the posture of not judging an effect too
early. It is the humility to admit that a visible event may not yet reveal its full meaning.
But it can become passive if misunderstood.
The law is not:
“Do nothing and wait.”
The law is:
Be Cause. Watch Effect. Do not misname the effect too early. Then choose again.
Cause and Effect means your thought, word, deed, posture, belief, attention, fear, love, and action all
participate in what is being created.
You are always involved in The Process.
You are either conscious or unconscious.
You are either living as Cause or experiencing yourself as Effect.
To live as Cause does not mean controlling everything.
It means taking responsibility for what you are contributing to the field.
The mature formula is:
Be Cause.
Ask: What am I putting into the field?
Watch Effect.
Ask: What is this producing?
Do not judge too early.
Ask: What is this becoming?
Choose again.
Ask: What new cause would better represent who I choose to be?
This is the practical movement of Free Will.
IX. How Do I Choose?
Now we return to the question in the image:
How do I choose?
This is the Free Will question.
Here is the method.
- Pause in the Now
Do not choose from panic.
Do not choose from trauma.
Do not choose from the old wound.
Do not choose while pretending.
Return to the center.
Ask:
What is actually happening now?
The Now is the point where awareness, choice, and experience meet.
You cannot choose clearly if you are not present.
- See What’s So
Observation comes before wisdom.
See what is actually happening.
Not what you wish was happening.
Not what you fear is happening.
Not what your ego says is happening.
Not what your family, religion, culture, or wound told you must be happening.
Ask:
What’s so?
What is the actual condition?
What is the actual pattern?
What is the actual effect?
What is the actual cost?
What is the actual fruit?
This is the beginning of higher evolution.
- Locate the Contrast
Ask:
Is this contrast something I need to experience directly, or can I learn by observation and revelation?
This is where many humans suffer unnecessarily.
They recreate pain locally because they believe they must personally suffer everything to know it.
But the universe already contains contrast.
You can observe.
You can remember.
You can learn.
You can choose without repeating.
Ask:
Do I need to touch this stove, or do I already know enough to step back?
- Apply F.A.S.
Now Sophia speaks.
Ask the three questions.
Functionality — Does it work?
Does this choice actually produce Life in reality?
Does it work in the body?
Does it work in the home?
Does it work in money?
Does it work in relationship?
Does it work in truth?
Does it work beyond fantasy?
Adaptability — Can it change without breaking?
Can this choice survive pressure?
Can it adjust when conditions change?
Can it grow?
Can it receive correction?
Can it remain alive when reality shifts?
Sustainability — Can it continue without collapse?
Can this pattern be lived over time?
Does it require self-betrayal?
Does it require constant rescue?
Does it destroy health, peace, integrity, or love?
Does it consume more Life than it creates?
If a choice does not function, adapt, or sustain, it is not wisdom yet.
It may be desire.
It may be impulse.
It may be fantasy.
It may be fear.
But it is not yet Sophia.
- Test the Quiet Signature
After F.A.S., test the inner signature.
Ask:
Does this carry Joy?
Not pleasure. Not excitement. Not escape.
Joy means: does this bring Life?
Even if it is hard, does something in me become cleaner and more alive?
Ask:
Does this carry Truth?
Can my soul honestly say this is true?
Does this require denial, manipulation, exaggeration, fantasy, or self-deception?
Ask:
Does this carry Love?
What would love do now?
Not fear.
Not pride.
Not revenge.
Not performance.
Not weakness.
Not control.
Love.
Love may say stay.
Love may say leave.
Love may say speak.
Love may say be silent.
Love may say rest.
Love may say confront.
Love may say forgive.
Love may say protect the boundary.
Love may say stop enabling destruction.
Love is not always soft. But love is always aligned with Life.
If Joy, Truth, and Love are not present together, slow down.
- Choose as Cause
Once you have observed, located the contrast, applied F.A.S., and tested the quiet signature, choose.
Do not choose as a victim of the field.
Choose as a cause within the field.
Say:
This is who I choose to be now.
Then think, speak, and act accordingly.
Thought selects.
Word assigns.
Deed embodies.
This is how Free Will becomes real.
- Watch the Effect
After choosing, watch what happens.
Do not worship the first result.
Do not panic.
Do not prematurely call it blessing or curse.
Observe the fruit.
Ask:
Does this create more Life?
Does this produce peace without denial?
Does this produce strength without cruelty?
Does this produce movement without collapse?
Does this produce love without possession?
Does this produce truth without hatred?
Then choose again.
This is the method.
X. Jesus and Miracles
This method can also help explain Jesus and miracles within the system.
A miracle is not a violation of law.
A miracle is law operating from a higher level of awareness.
Jesus does not appear as someone trapped by the local effect. He appears as someone rooted in Cause. He sees
sickness, but he does not worship sickness as final truth. He sees death, but he does not worship death as
annihilation. He sees sin, but he does not worship sin as identity.
He observes what is so.
He sees what works.
He recognizes the soul’s readiness.
He speaks from unity.
He acts from Life.
In this framework, Jesus’ miracles are acts of perfect observation, perfect remembrance, and perfect alignment.
He does not need to recreate the opposite in order to know the truth. He knows the field. He knows Life. He
speaks from the Great I while standing inside the local I.
That is why healing is not domination.
Healing is not overriding Free Will.
Healing is Life responding to a soul that is ready to choose a higher configuration.
A miracle is what happens when the local condition is not treated as the final reality, and a higher truth is
embodied through thought, word, deed, and love.
The miracle is not magic against nature.
The miracle is nature remembered at a deeper level.
XI. The Practical Formula
The whole system can be condensed into a practical formula.
Dream provides the field.
Time appears as relation among Nows.
Memory stores the records.
Experience creates memory through consequence.
Revelation awakens memory through observation.
Desire gives direction.
Sophia tests the direction through F.A.S.
Free Will chooses the relation.
The body embodies the choice.
Cause produces effect.
Observation reads the effect.
Love chooses again.
This is the movement of conscious Life.
The human being becomes highly evolved not by escaping reality, but by observing reality without distortion
and responding without self-betrayal.
A highly evolved being is not one who never encounters contrast.
A highly evolved being is one who does not need to keep recreating contrast locally in order to remember what
it already knows.
XII. The Final Answer to “How Do I Choose?”
You choose by standing in the Now and refusing unconsciousness.
You choose by seeing what is actually so.
You choose by remembering that contrast already exists in the field.
You choose by learning through revelation when possible and experience when necessary.
You choose by asking whether the choice functions, adapts, and sustains.
You choose by listening for joy, truth, and love.
You choose by becoming Cause.
You choose by acting.
You choose by watching the effect.
You choose by choosing again.
That is Free Will.
Not random impulse.
Not passive fate.
Not fantasy.
Not denial.
Free Will is the sacred power to select your relation to the field of Life.
And the highest choice is not merely, “What do I want?”
The highest choice is:
What works for Life?
What carries truth?
What would love do now?
What can I become without betraying what is real?
That is how the local I learns to move with the Great I.
That is how Desire becomes Life.
That is how Wisdom orders choice.
That is how the soul stops needing pain as its only teacher.
That is how the human being becomes a conscious participant in the field of Nows.
Not carried by time.
Not trapped by death.
Not ruled by fear.
But awake in the Now.
Seeing what’s so.
Doing what works.
Choosing as Life.
