Chapter 30: Complex Sentences
Edition 2.5 1. Purpose A simple Living Sentence reveals one central becoming.
Human thought often requires more than one.
A speaker may need to express: Two events occurring together One event following another A choice between alternatives Contrast Cause Result Purpose Condition Exception Concession Description through a relative clause Knowledge, memory, or thought containing another proposition Several participants acting under different responsibilities Complex grammar must allow these meanings without hiding: Who acted What caused what Which clause is uncertain What condition applies Where consent begins and ends Which participant a description identifies Which information is central Which information is merely additional The central principle is: Clauses may enter relationship without losing their boundaries.
- The Clause A clause is a grammatical field containing one central predicate or complete speech act.
Examples:
Dorel-ar me koren.
This speaker repairs the system.
Kai.
Received.
Nava.
This speaker refuses.
Elar norel va-horen.
Water is present inside the shelter.
A clause may be independent or dependent.
- Independent Clause An Independent Clause can stand as a complete Living Sentence.
Example:
Tirem-ar tu norel.
The listener measures the water.
It does not require another clause to complete its central meaning.
- Dependent Clause A Dependent Clause frames, qualifies, explains, or completes another clause.
Example:
Ili tirem-mel har limit
If the measurement result is above the limit.
This clause establishes a condition but does not state the consequence.
A complete conditional sentence adds a main clause:
Ili tirem-mel har limit · tam koren.
If the measurement result is above the limit, stop the system.
- The Three Complex-Sentence Relationships Complex sentences use three broad relationships.
5.1 Coordination Two clauses hold approximately equal grammatical status.
Example:
Dorel-ar me koren ai tirem-ar tu norel.
This speaker repairs the system, and the listener measures the water.
5.2 Framing or Subordination One clause establishes the condition, time, cause, concession, or purpose of another.
Example:
Nari nakor-en koren · dorel-iel me ni.
Because the system failed, this speaker begins repairing it.
5.3 Embedding One clause enters another as its content, question, memory, thought, or description.
Example:
Nareþ-om me li dorel-om koren.
This speaker knows that the system repair is complete.
- The Complex-Sentence Pattern The preferred broad structure is: Frame Clause — Main Clause — Additional Clause — Rest A practical notation is: F ₁ · M ₁ Link M ₂ ⟂ Examples: Ili taren pelen-ar · tam koren ⟂ If danger emerges, stop the system.
Eren li dorel-iel me koren · tam-en me pelar ⟂ Before beginning the repair, this speaker stopped the power.
The main clause should remain discoverable without requiring the listener to hold an excessive number of unfinished clauses in memory.
- Clause Linkers The foundational Clause Linkers are: Form Meaning ai And; additional clause oya Or; one or more alternatives bei But; contrast or contrary expectation nari Because; explanatory cause or reason sori Therefore; result, consequence, or inference veli Although; concession ili If; condition neli Unless; exception condition rei Who, which, or that; relative clause li That, whether, or clause-content marker Existing temporal and relational forms also connect clauses: eren — before paya — after sama — while or during ren — for the purpose of na- — from a source te — concerning 8. Field Relationship Particles connect presences and roles.

The particle ma joins participants through accompaniment.
The linker ai joins clauses through addition.
- AI — Additive Coordination Core Meaning A second clause is added without automatically specifying cause, contrast, sequence, or equality.
Example:
Dorel-ar me koren ai tirem-ar tu norel.
This speaker repairs the system, and the listener measures the water.
Anti-Definition ai does not automatically mean: Therefore At the same time Afterward Because Equal responsibility Shared consent Shared Voice Those relationships require additional grammar.
- Additive Clauses Two complete clauses may be joined with ai.
Structure:
Clause A — AI — Clause B
Example:
Jarel-ar Mark horen ai dorel-ar Skylar norel-ker.
Mark builds the shelter, and Skylar repairs the water system.
Each clause retains its own participant structure.
- Participant Repetition Across AI Formal and safety-sensitive grammar repeats the participant in each clause.
Preferred:
Dorel-ar me koren ai tirem-ar me norel.
This speaker repairs the system and measures the water.
Potentially ambiguous:
Dorel-ar me koren ai tirem-ar norel.
The second clause may be interpreted as though water were the Primary Participant.
Ordinary conversation may omit repeated material only when the intended structure is unmistakable.
- AI Does Not Establish Sequence
Example:
Tirem-en me norel ai dorel-iel me koren.
This speaker measured the water and began repairing the system.
This statement does not explicitly establish which event occurred first.
To establish sequence:
Eren · tirem-en me norel · paya · dorel-iel me koren.
First, this speaker measured the water. Afterward, this speaker began repairing the system.
- AI Does Not Establish Simultaneity
Example:
Dorel-ar me koren ai tirem-ar tu norel.
The two events are both asserted.
They may or may not overlap.
To establish temporal overlap:
Sama · dorel-ar me koren ai tirem-ar tu norel.
At the same time, this speaker repairs the system and the listener measures the water.
- AI and Lists The linker ai may join qualities, actions, or propositions when the addition is logical rather than relational.
Example:
Doma ai tuma ni frame.
The frame is large and rigid.
For participants acting together, ma or an explicit plural Participant Form is normally better.
- OYA — Alternative Core Meaning One or more alternatives are presented.
Example:
Mira · dorel tu koren oya meran tu ni task ren se.
Please repair the system or transfer the task to another participant.
By default, oya is inclusive.
One alternative, the other, or both may be possible unless the context restricts the choice.
- Inclusive Alternative
Example:
Vel jora tu tirem oya dorel.
The listener is permitted to perform measurement, repair, or both.
The statement should not be interpreted as permitting only one action.
- Exclusive Alternative
Exactly one alternative is marked through:
kare an oya
Meaning:
Exactly one of the alternatives.
Example:
Kare an oya · diri path: east, west.
Exactly one path must be chosen: east or west.
A technical choice should number or label the alternatives.
- Alternatives and Consent A choice is not valid merely because several alternatives are presented.
The listener may still need access to: Refusal Clarification Delay Another proposal Partial participation Withdrawal False choice remains coercive even when oya is used correctly.
- Alternatives in Safety Procedures A safety procedure should avoid vague alternatives.
Weak:
Stop the pump or close the valve.
Clearer:
Stop the pump if the emergency shutdown is available.
If shutdown fails, close the isolation valve.
The alternatives should identify: Priority Conditions Required sequence Failure handling 20. BEI — Contrast Core Meaning The second clause contrasts with the first or differs from an ordinary expectation arising from it.
Example:
Dorel-om koren bei ne-om tirem ni.
The repair is complete, but testing is not complete.
Example:
Kaya dorel me koren bei nava me.
This speaker is able to repair the system but refuses.
Anti-Definition bei does not automatically mean that the clauses logically contradict one another.
It marks contrast.
- Contrast and Responsibility
Example:
Ne ya jora me harm bei jor me ni harm.
This speaker did not intend harm, but the harm arose through this speaker’s action.
The contrast preserves both truths.
Lack of intent does not erase consequence.
- Contrast and Consent
Example:
Marel-ar me te tu bei ne velor-ar me te ni action.
This speaker trusts the listener, but does not consent to the action.
Trust and consent remain separate.
- Contrastive Correction A correction may use bei, though direct correction often remains clearer.
Example:
Ne Mark dorel-en koren bei Skylar.
Not Mark, but Skylar repaired the system.
Preferred complete form:
Ne dorel-en Mark koren · dorel-en Skylar ni.
Mark did not repair the system; Skylar did.
The fuller clause preserves the predicate and responsibility more clearly.
- NARI — Cause or Reason Core Meaning The clause introduced by nari is presented as explaining why another clause occurs, is believed, or is chosen.
Example:
Nari nakor-en koren · dorel-iel me ni.
Because the system failed, this speaker begins repairing it.
Example:
Nari ne tirem-om norel · ne vel drink ni.
Because water testing is incomplete, drinking it is not permitted.
Anti-Definition nari does not prove causation merely by being spoken.
The causal relationship remains a claim requiring appropriate evidence.
- Cause-First Order The explanatory clause commonly appears first.
Structure:
NARI + Cause Clause · Result Clause
Example:
Nari taren pelen-en va-horen · ral-en sena ni space.
Because danger emerged within the shelter, the participants moved away from the space.
Cause-first order prepares the listener to interpret the main event.
- Result-First Order The result may appear first when it is the main focus.
Example:
Ral-en sena va-horen nari taren pelen-en va ni.
The participants left the shelter because danger emerged inside it.
This order is natural when the outcome is more important than the explanation.
- Cause Versus Source A noun or presence may be introduced as a source through na-.
Example:
Na-taren · tareþ dorel-en koren.
From danger, the repair was interrupted.
A complete explanatory clause uses nari.
Example:
Nari taren pelen-en · tareþ dorel-en koren.
Because danger emerged, the repair was interrupted.
The second form states a complete causal proposition.
- Cause Versus Purpose
Compare:
Nari nakor-en koren · dorel-iel me ni.
Because the system failed, this speaker began repair.
Dorel-ar me koren ren li jora-ar ni kare.
This speaker repairs the system so that it functions correctly.
Cause looks backward toward explanation.
Purpose looks forward toward intended outcome.
- Cause Versus Evidence
Compare:
Nari pressure har limit · tam-en koren.
Because pressure exceeded the limit, the system stopped.
Na-tirem-mel · nareþ-om me li pressure har limit.
From the measurement record, this speaker knows that pressure exceeded the limit.
One statement describes cause.
The other identifies evidence.
- Correlation Is Not Cause Two events occurring together do not automatically justify nari.
Example:
The pump failed while the temperature increased.
This establishes overlap.
It does not prove the temperature caused the failure.
Preferred:
Sama li nakor-en pump · garen-en temperature.
While the pump failed, the temperature increased.
Use nari only when the causal relation is supported sufficiently for the context.
- Human Reasons A participant’s reason for acting may be reported with nari.
Example:
Þalen-en me ral ni group nari ne velor-ar me te ni action.
This speaker left the group because this speaker did not consent to the action.
The reason belongs to the participant’s account unless externally verified.
- SORI — Result or Consequence Core Meaning The second clause is presented as a result, consequence, or inference from the first.
Example:
Nakor-en koren · sori dorel-iel me ni.
The system failed; therefore, this speaker begins repairing it.
Example:
Ne velor-ar tu · sori ke jora ni action.
The listener’s consent is not active; therefore, the action must not be performed.
Anti-Definition sori does not automatically establish that the inference is logically valid.
It reveals the proposed relationship.
- Consequence Versus Cause
Compare:
Nari nakor-en koren · dorel-iel me ni.
Because the system failed, this speaker begins repair.
Nakor-en koren · sori dorel-iel me ni.
The system failed; therefore, this speaker begins repair.
The first frames the failure as explanation.
The second emphasizes the resulting decision or event.
- Physical Result
Example:
Pelar-en har limit · sori tam-en koren.
Energy exceeded the limit; consequently, the system stopped.
This may describe a designed automatic consequence or a physical result.
The mechanism should be stated in technical records.
- Inferential Result
Example:
Æm tirem-mel pelen-en rima sor hora · sori ænareya ni system state.
No measurement result appeared for three hours; therefore, the system state is uncertain.
The result is an inference, not a directly measured condition.
The source and confidence should remain visible.
- SORI and Commands A conclusion does not automatically authorize a command.
Example:
Taren pelen-en · sori tara ral tu.
Danger emerged; therefore, the speaker commands the listener to move away.
The command still requires immediate protective necessity or valid authority.
- VELI — Concession Core Meaning The main clause remains true despite a condition that might ordinarily suggest otherwise.
Example:
Veli taren-ves ni path · þalen-en sena va ni.
Although the path was dangerous, they traveled through it.
Example:
Veli ne kaya dorel me complete · mira me assistance.
Although this speaker cannot complete the repair, this speaker requests assistance.
- Concession Does Not Cancel Risk
Example:
Veli nivi taren-ves di path ron ra path · ne safe-ves di.
Although this path is less dangerous than the other path, it is not established as safe.
The concessive relation prevents “less dangerous” from being misread as “safe.”
- Concession and Consent
Example:
Veli marel-ar me te tu · ne velor-ar me te touch.
Although this speaker trusts the listener, this speaker does not consent to touch.
One relational quality does not override another boundary.
- VELI ILI — Even If
The sequence:
veli ili
means:
Even if the stated condition occurs, the main clause remains.
Example:
Veli ili sora velor-ar · nava me.
Even if the group consents, this speaker refuses.
Example:
Veli ili dorel-om koren · tor tirem-om ni eren jora.
Even if repair reaches completion, testing must be completed before operation.
- ILI — Condition Core Meaning The introduced clause establishes a condition under which another clause applies.
Example:
Ili tirem-mel har limit · tam koren.
If the measurement result is above the limit, stop the system.
Example:
Ili velor-ar tu · vel jora me ni action.
If the listener’s consent is active, this speaker may perform the action.
Anti-Definition An ili clause does not assert that the condition is true.
It establishes a dependency.
- Conditional Structure
The preferred order is:
ILI + Condition · Consequence
Example:
Ili norel pava ni soil · tirem tu irrigation.
If the soil is dry, measure the irrigation supply.
The condition should be observable or defined when operational decisions depend on it.
- Consequence Marker in Conditionals The consequence may optionally use sori.
Example:
Ili pressure har 300 kPa · sori tam koren.
If pressure exceeds 300 kilopascals, then stop the system.
In ordinary speech, sori may be omitted.
In technical or instructional writing, it may make the condition-result boundary clearer.
- Open Conditions An Open Condition describes a genuinely unresolved possibility.
Example:
Ili rain pelen-ar paya dava · hem þalen.
If rain begins tomorrow, pause the journey.
The sentence does not predict whether rain will occur.
- Known Conditions When the condition is already known to be true, a causal or temporal linker may be better than ili.
Less direct:
If the system has failed, begin repair.
when failure is already confirmed.
Clearer:
Nari nakor-om koren · dorel-iel me ni.
Because system failure is confirmed, this speaker begins repair.
- Conditional Permission
Example:
Ili jora-om safety test · vel jora koren.
If the safety test reaches completion, operation of the system is permitted.
This does not grant permission before the condition is fulfilled.
- Conditional Consent Consent should not be assumed through a conditional plan.
Example:
Ili velor-ar tu nu · jora-iel ni action.
If the listener’s consent is presently active, the action may begin.
The condition must be checked at the time of action.
A past statement about possible future consent does not activate consent automatically.
- Multiple Conditions Several conditions may be joined with ai.
Example:
Ili velor-ar tu ai dorel-om safety check · vel jora ni action.
If the listener’s consent is active and the safety check is complete, the action is permitted.
Both conditions are required.
- Alternative Conditions Alternative sufficient conditions may use oya.
Example:
Ili authorization jor steward oya emergency state pelen-ar · vel tam me koren.
If the steward authorizes it or an emergency state emerges, this speaker may stop the system.
The sentence should clarify whether either condition alone is sufficient.
- Nested Conditions Ordinary sentences should avoid conditions inside conditions.
Dense:
If the valve opens if the sensor confirms pressure, then if the operator is present, restart the
pump.
Preferred:
Confirm pressure.
If pressure is within range, open the valve.
Confirm the operator is present.
If the operator is present, restart the pump.
Procedures should prefer visible steps over deeply nested grammar.
- NELI — Unless Core Meaning The main clause applies except when the stated condition is fulfilled.
Example:
Neli velor-ar tu · ke jora ni action.
Unless the listener’s consent is active, do not perform the action.
Example:
Neli tirem-mel sela marel-ves · ne kare ni claim.
Unless the measurement evidence is sufficiently trustworthy, do not confirm the claim.
- Unless as Exception
The structure is:
NELI + Exception Condition · Main Clause
Example:
Neli taren pelen-ar · þalen-iel matu paya meya.
Unless danger emerges, you and I will begin the journey tomorrow morning.
The main clause is expected to apply when the exception does not occur.
- Unless and Negation Unless clauses can become difficult when combined with additional negation.
Hard to parse:
Neli ne tirem-mel ne sela · ne jora.
Preferred positive restructuring:
Ili sela tirem-mel · vel jora.
If the measurement evidence is sufficient, the action is permitted.
Positive conditions are generally easier to verify.
- Only If
A necessary condition may be expressed as:
kare ili
Meaning:
Only if this exact condition is fulfilled.
Example:
Vel jora koren kare ili safety test dorel-om.
The system may be operated only if the safety test is complete.
This construction is classified as: Founding–Experimental
Chapter 32 will formalize necessary and
sufficient conditions more deeply.
- EREN LI — Before a Clause The temporal frame eren combines with li when the reference point is a complete clause.
Structure:
EREN LI + Clause · Main Clause
Example:
Eren li dorel-iel me koren · tam-en me pelar.
Before this speaker began repairing the system, this speaker stopped the power.
- PAYA LI — After a Clause
Structure:
PAYA LI + Clause · Main Clause
Example:
Paya li tirem-om me norel · dorel-iel me koren.
After this speaker completed measuring the water, this speaker began repairing the system.
The Bloom stage inside the reference clause should be explicit.
- SAMA LI — While or During
Structure:
SAMA LI + Clause · Main Clause
Example:
Sama li dorel-ar me koren · tirem-ar tu norel.
While this speaker repairs the system, the listener measures the water.
The events overlap within the relevant interval.
They need not begin or end simultaneously.
- Temporal Clause Scope
Compare:
Eren li dorel-iel me koren · tirem-en me norel.
Before beginning the repair, this speaker measured the water.
Dorel-iel me koren paya li tirem-om me norel.
This speaker began the repair after completing the water measurement.
The temporal clause may come before or after the main clause.
Initial placement is preferred when it frames the whole event.
- Temporal Responsibility When several participants are involved, names or Participant Forms should be repeated.
Example:
Paya li tirem-om Skylar norel · dorel-iel Mark koren.
After Skylar completed the water measurement, Mark began repairing the system.
Omitting the participants could falsely assign both actions to one person.
- REN LI — Purpose Clause The sequence: ren li introduces an intended outcome.
Example:
Dorel-ar me koren ren li jora-ar ni kare.
This speaker repairs the system so that it functions correctly.
Example:
Tirem-ar tu norel ren li nareþ-om sora ni safety state.
The listener measures the water so that the group may establish its safety status.
- Purpose Is Not Result
Example:
Jarel-en sena horen ren li elar yava safe va ni.
They built the shelter so that animals could remain safely within it.
This states the intended purpose.
It does not prove the shelter achieved that purpose.
Actual result requires a separate clause.
- Intended and Actual Outcome
Example:
Jarel-en sena horen ren li elar yava safe va ni · bei nakor-en ni purpose.
They built the shelter so that animals could remain safely within it, but the intended purpose failed.
Purpose and result are explicitly separated.
- LI — Clause Content Marker Core Meaning The material following li is treated as the content of: Knowledge Thought Memory Perception Belief Uncertainty Report Question Decision Example: Nareþ-om me li dorel-om koren.
This speaker knows that the system repair is complete.
The clause following li functions as the Focus of the mental or communicative predicate.
- Knowledge Content
Example:
Nareþ-om me li norel elar va-horen.
This speaker knows that water is present inside the shelter.
The sentence distinguishes: The knowing participant The known proposition 65. Thought Content Example: Minar-ar me li hei nakor koren.
This speaker thinks that the system may fail.
The embedded possibility remains inside the thought.
The sentence does not independently assert system failure.
- Memory Content
Example:
Varen-ar me li eren dorel-en Skylar koren.
This speaker remembers that Skylar repaired the system earlier.
The sentence reports memory as the source.
It does not guarantee the memory’s accuracy.
- Perceived Content
Example:
Irel-ar me li taren pelen-ar va-horen.
This speaker perceives that danger is emerging inside the shelter.
A fuller evidential statement should distinguish whether the perception arises through: Sight Sound Smell Bodily sensation Instrument Inference 68. Uncertain Content Example: Ænareya me li dorel-om koren.
This speaker is uncertain whether the system repair is complete.
The embedded clause is not affirmed or denied.
- Negated Knowledge
Compare:
Ne nareþ-om me li dorel-om koren.
This speaker does not know that the system repair is complete.
This may mean the speaker lacks settled knowledge.
It does not necessarily mean the repair is incomplete.
To deny the embedded proposition:
Nareþ-om me li ne-om dorel koren.
This speaker knows that the system repair is not complete.
The position of negation changes the meaning.
- Embedded Questions An Information Question may appear after li without a final question mark.
Example:
Ne nareþ me li teri dorel-iel koren.
This speaker does not know when repair will begin.
Example:
Nareþ-ar me li eni jora-en ni action.
This speaker is discovering who initiated the action.
Example:
Ireya me li diri telem vel jora.
This speaker seeks clarification about which tool is permitted for use.
- Direct Versus Embedded Questions
Direct:
Teri · dorel-iel koren?
When will repair begin?
Embedded:
Ne nareþ me li teri dorel-iel koren.
This speaker does not know when repair will begin.
An embedded question is not addressed directly to the listener unless an outer Request or Question Movement makes it so.
- Embedded Commands Commands should not normally be hidden inside reported or mental clauses.
Example:
Mark said, “Tam koren!”
This is a direct quotation of a command.
Example:
Mark reported li tor tam koren.
Mark reported that the system was required to stop.
The second sentence reports content.
It does not itself command the current listener.
Quotation and reported-speech grammar will be completed in Chapter 35.
- REI — Relative Clause Core Meaning A clause introduced by rei describes or identifies a preceding Presence Form.
Structure:
Presence — REI — Descriptive Clause
Example:
dosta rei dorel-en koren
The companion who repaired the system.
Example:
koren rei dorel-en me
The system that this speaker repaired.
- Relative Clauses as Attributive Description A relative clause follows the Presence Form it describes.
Example:
Dorel-ar me telem rei nakor-en eren.
This speaker repairs the tool that failed earlier.
The relative clause:
rei nakor-en eren
identifies which tool is meant.
- Head Presence The Presence Form being described is called the: Head Presence In: telem rei nakor-en eren the Head Presence is: telem The relative clause supplies additional identifying information about that tool.
- Compact Relative Clauses The Head Presence may fill an omitted role in the relative clause when only one interpretation is plausible.
Example:
dosta rei dorel-en koren
The companion who repaired the system.
The missing Primary Participant of dorel-en is understood as the companion.
Example:
koren rei dorel-en me
The system that this speaker repaired.
The missing Focus is understood as the system.
- Exact Relative Clauses With NI When the Head Presence’s role might be ambiguous, ni represents it inside the relative clause.
Subject relative:
dosta rei dorel-en ni koren
The companion who repaired the system.
Object relative:
koren rei dorel-en me ni
The system that this speaker repaired.
Location relative:
horen rei elar me va-ni
The shelter within which this speaker is present.
This structure is preferred in formal writing.
- Restrictive Relative Clause A Restrictive Relative Clause identifies which member of a set is intended.
Example:
Dorel-ar me telem rei nakor-en eren.
This speaker repairs the tool that failed earlier.
The relative clause is necessary to identify the intended tool.
No strong pause separates it from the Head Presence.
- Supplementary Relative Clause A Supplementary Relative Clause adds information about an already identified presence.
Example:
Mark · rei elar ni sael-dai · dorel-ar ni koren.
Mark, who serves as a steward, repairs the system.
The Flow Marks show that the relative clause is additional rather than necessary for identifying Mark.
- Relative Clause and Consent Example: se rei velor-ar ni te ni action The participant whose consent is active for the action.
This identifies a consent state.
It does not imply consent to any other action.
Relative description must preserve consent scope.
- Relative Clause and Responsibility Example: se rei jor ni damage The participant through whose action the damage occurred.
This states causal agency.
It does not automatically establish intention, negligence, or legal liability.
- Multiple Relative Clauses A Presence Form may receive more than one relative clause, but ordinary speech should avoid long chains.
Dense:
The system that Mark repaired, which Skylar tested, that the council owns, which failed last
year…
Preferred:
Identify the system.
State who repaired it.
State who tested it.
State title separately.
State its failure history separately.
One relative clause per Presence Form is preferred in ordinary speech.
- Relative-Clause Nesting A relative clause inside another relative clause is: Restricted–Experimental It should normally be rewritten as separate sentences.
Nested descriptions place a heavy memory burden on listeners and increase reference errors.
- Clause-Level Negation Negation normally remains inside its own clause.
Example:
Dorel-ar me koren ai ne tirem-ar tu norel.
This speaker repairs the system, and the listener is not measuring the water.
The first clause remains affirmative.
The second clause is negative.
- Negating a Link Relationship A speaker may deny the proposed relationship between clauses.
Example:

This invites both actions.
To invite them separately, ask separate questions.
The listener may accept one and decline the other.

Technical writing should avoid relying on punctuation alone for critical instrument scope.
- Cause Scope
Example:

Because danger emerged, this speaker stopped the system and the listener moved away.
The cause applies to both coordinated result clauses.
To restrict the cause to only one event, separate the clauses.
- Conditional Scope
Example:

If rain begins, pause the journey and return to the shelter.
Both actions fall under the condition.

- Parenthetical Information Parenthetical information adds secondary material that is not required to interpret the central clause.

Clauses before the Rest remain related within the same utterance.
- Maximum Ordinary Clause Load An ordinary spoken sentence should normally contain no more than: Three central clauses One dependent frame One relative clause One embedded content clause This is a usability guideline rather than an absolute grammatical ban.
Beyond this load, divide the thought.
- Technical Sentence Limit
Technical and safety writing should prefer:
One decision-bearing proposition per sentence.
Example:
Pressure exceeds 300 kPa.
Stop Pump-2.
Close the isolation valve.
Confirm zero energy.
Report the incident.
A single elegant sentence is less valuable than a procedure that cannot be misread.
- Legal Sentence Limit Legal writing may require detailed relationships.

The ground was dry. The sky was gray. The referenced presence journeyed within the forest.
As night emerged, wonder began within them.
Short sentences may carry more power than one overloaded construction.
- Cause in Narrative A narrator should distinguish: What happened What a character believed caused it What the narrator infers What later evidence establishes Example: Mark minar-en li nakor-en koren nari heat. Paya tirem-mel nareþ-om li cause elar broken seal.
Mark believed the system failed because of heat. Later measurement established that the cause was a broken seal.
Character interpretation and established cause remain separate.
- Complex Sentences and Evidence A conclusion may be structurally clear but evidentially weak.

The conclusion may be false.
A safer form:

Logical grammar must not outrun evidence.

Did both inspect and repair?
Clear:

Mark inspected or measured the system, and Skylar repaired it.
Or:

The speaker and listener jointly performed both actions.
- Complex Sentences and Consent Consent clauses should remain short.
Preferred:
Velor-ar tu te ni action. Ili ne-ar velor tu · tam ni action.
The listener’s consent is active for this action. If consent ceases to be active, stop the action.
Avoid placing consent as one minor condition inside a long sentence.
- Complex Sentences and Boundaries
Example:
Marel-ar me te tu bei nalem-ar me te ni topic · sori nava me disclosure.
This speaker trusts the listener, but maintains a boundary concerning the topic; therefore, this speaker declines disclosure.
Trust does not dissolve boundaries.
- Complex Sentences and Emergency Speech Emergency speech should avoid complex subordination unless the condition is essential.
Preferred:
Taren! Gas va-horen! Ke þel! Ral!
Danger! Gas inside the shelter! Do not enter! Move away!
Less effective: Because gas may be present inside the shelter, which was inspected earlier, you should consider avoiding entry unless… Emergency language prioritizes immediate protection.

When a listener loses the structure, the speaker should:
Stop.
Identify the main claim.
State the participants.
Add one relationship at a time.
Replace pronouns with names if needed.
Separate condition from consequence.
Separate evidence from conclusion.
Ask whether the meaning is now clear.
Complexity should be repairable without shame.
